CUPRIC OXIDE
Property: black to brown amorphous powder or crystalline particles (monoclinic crystals). Relative density 6.315, melting point 1446 °C, Mohs hardness 3-4, dielectric constant 18.10, insoluble in water, soluble in acid, ammonia, ammonium chloride, dissolved in sodium hydroxide to produce blue color solution, which leads to hydrogen or carbon monoxide at high temperature.
Application: used in making fibers, ceramics, gas analyses and for Welding fluxes. Cupric Oxide is used as a catalyst and in catalyst preparation. Cupric Oxide (CuO) is the higher oxide of copper. Cupric oxide is used as a pigment in ceramics to produce blue, and green glazes. Cupric oxide is used as flux in copper and bronze metallurgy, in galvanic electrodes, as solvents for chromic iron ores, and also used in manufacturing wood preservatives.
